As summer reaches its peak in the vineyards of the Diarizos Valley, the signs of another harvest are beginning to appear. The berries are changing colour, the aromas are developing, and each vineyard is gradually revealing the character of the season.
Harvest 2026 carries particular meaning for Nelion Winery. This year, we celebrate thirty years since the winery was established in 1996—three decades shaped by our family, our vineyards and our commitment to the indigenous varieties of Cyprus.
Yet a harvest is never simply a repetition of the year before. Every growing season presents its own conditions, challenges and possibilities. Our work is to observe carefully, intervene with purpose and allow each vineyard to express what the year has given it.
The Final Weeks in the Vineyard
The weeks approaching harvest are among the most important of the entire year. Sugar levels, acidity, flavour development and the condition of the grapes are monitored closely, but the decision to harvest cannot be made by numbers alone.
We walk through the vineyards, taste the berries and examine the skins, seeds and stems. Each parcel is considered individually, because even vineyards located close to one another can mature at a different pace.
At Nelion, harvesting begins only when the grapes have reached the balance we are looking for. The aim is not simply maximum ripeness, but freshness, precision and the ability to translate the identity of the vineyard into the finished wine.
Indigenous Varieties, Distinct Expressions
Xynisteri will once again stand at the centre of our harvest. Cultivated across different vineyards and elevations, the variety offers several distinct expressions—from fresh, mineral wines matured in stainless steel to more complex interpretations shaped by extended skin contact, fine lees and acacia.
Our approach remains clear: Xynisteri redefined. Not by separating the variety from its origins, but by exploring its full potential through detailed vineyard work and thoughtful winemaking.
The red varieties Ofthalmo and Maratheftiko will also play an important role in the 2026 vintage. Ofthalmo brings freshness, fine structure and a character found nowhere outside Cyprus, while Maratheftiko offers depth, intensity and ageing potential.
Each variety requires a different approach. Fermentation, extraction and maturation are adjusted according to the grapes rather than imposed through a fixed formula.
Viticulture Shaped by the Landscape
Our vineyards are rooted in rocky limestone soils, on slopes where cultivation is demanding and mechanisation is limited. This is a landscape that requires patience, physical work and constant presence.
Organic farming allows us to work with respect for this environment, while the principles of heroic viticulture recognise the effort required to cultivate vines in difficult and often steep terrain.
These conditions are challenging, but they are also an essential part of the identity of our wines. Low yields, dry conditions and the natural restrictions of the landscape create fruit with concentration, freshness and a strong connection to its place of origin.
Thirty Years, One Continuing Philosophy
Over the past three decades, Nelion has evolved. New techniques have been introduced, new wines have been created and our understanding of the vineyards has continued to deepen.
What has remained unchanged is our philosophy: wine begins in the vineyard, but it is completed through human judgement. Every decision—from pruning and harvesting to fermentation and maturation—is made with the same objective: to produce wines that are authentic, precise and unmistakably connected to Cyprus.
Harvest 2026 will soon begin. The cellar is being prepared, the equipment is being checked and the vineyards are entering their final stage of maturation.
Another vintage is approaching, bringing with it new challenges, new decisions and new possibilities. After thirty years, the anticipation remains exactly the same.
The vineyards will determine the rhythm.
We will be ready to follow it.
