Ofthalmo — A Different Expression of Cyprus

Some grape varieties reveal themselves immediately. Ofthalmo does not.

One of Cyprus’s indigenous red varieties, Ofthalmo has a character that is difficult to compare with more familiar international grapes. Its identity lies not in power or concentration, but in freshness, tension and an unmistakable sense of place.

At Nelion, we have always believed that varieties such as Ofthalmo deserve to be understood on their own terms.

A Variety That Refuses to Be Forced

Ofthalmo is naturally low yielding in our vineyards, producing small quantities of fruit with remarkable natural acidity. On the limestone soils and demanding slopes of our vineyards, that combination gives us something increasingly valuable in a warm Mediterranean climate: the ability to produce a red wine with energy and freshness without having to manufacture those qualities in the cellar.

But Ofthalmo also requires restraint.

Trying to extract too much from the skins can easily overpower the character of the variety. Our approach therefore focuses on gentle extraction during fermentation, working carefully with the cap and avoiding the temptation to build the wine around excessive tannin or structure.

The objective is not to make Ofthalmo behave like another red grape.

It is to allow it to remain Ofthalmo.

Freshness Before Power

Modern red wine is often associated with concentration, deep colour and weight. Ofthalmo offers another interpretation.

For us, its strength is precisely its ability to move in the opposite direction.

The wine is built around freshness, precision and drinkability. Its naturally vibrant acidity provides the backbone, while careful winemaking allows texture and structure to develop without masking the personality of the fruit.

The result is a red wine that feels distinctly Mediterranean, yet never heavy.

This balance is particularly important to the way we think about wine at Nelion. Our climate provides more than enough ripeness and intensity. The challenge — and the opportunity — is to preserve energy.

Part of Cyprus, Part of Our Philosophy

Working with indigenous varieties is not an exercise in nostalgia.

For us, it is about understanding what Cyprus can express today.

Ofthalmo belongs to a generation of Cypriot varieties that deserves to be considered not simply because it is local, but because it can produce wines with a genuinely individual identity. Its low yields, natural freshness and particular structure give us a vocabulary that international varieties cannot reproduce.

That individuality is what interests us.

Our vineyards are cultivated under demanding conditions, on steep limestone slopes where viticulture requires considerably more work than convenience would dictate. This heroic approach to viticulture is not separate from the wine; it is part of the reason the wine exists as it does.

The vineyard establishes the limits. The cellar respects them.

An Indigenous Variety for the Present

Ofthalmo does not need to imitate the great red varieties of elsewhere to justify its place.

Its value lies in being different.

By approaching it with precision, restrained extraction and an emphasis on freshness, we aim to show a more contemporary expression of one of Cyprus’s indigenous grapes — rooted in our landscape, but interpreted with the clarity and confidence of modern winemaking.

For Nelion, that is the future of Cypriot wine: not reproducing what already exists elsewhere, but understanding more deeply what can exist only here.
